Choosing the Perfect PVC Solvent cement and Primer.
When it comes to piping systems, selecting the right primer and cement is essential for creating durable joints and preventing leaks. Here’s a complete guide to help you make the right choice.
Types of PVC Primers
PVC primers are used to soften pipe and fittings before solvent welding, ensuring a secure bond. They are available in:
Medium Body Primer – Ideal for Schedule 40 PVC pipe and fittings.
Heavy (Industrial) Body Primer – Recommended for large diameter Schedule 40 pipes and fittings, and required for Schedule 80 PVC and all CPVC applications due to thicker walls.
Color Options:
Purple Primer – Preferred for industrial projects and inspected jobs, as its visibility allows inspectors to easily confirm proper priming.
Clear Primer – Used for residential projects where aesthetics are important.
Types of Solvent Cement
Solvent cement is available in different grades based on pipe type and diameter:
- Medium Body Cement – For Schedule 40 PVC up to 6" diameter and Schedule 80 up to 4".
- Heavy Body Cement – For larger diameters (Schedule 40 above 6", Schedule 80 between 4"–12").
- Extra Heavy Body Cement – Required for extremely large pipes (14"+ for Schedule 40, over 12" for Schedule 80).
CPVC Cement – A specialized cement in gray color for all CPVC pipes and fittings.
Color Options:
Medium & heavy body cements come in clear or gray (heavy body only in gray).
How to Choose the Right Primer & Cement
Step 1 – Identify the Material
Schedule 40: Medium or heavy body primer and cement.
Schedule 80 & CPVC: Always use heavy/industrial primer and the appropriate cement grade.
Step 2 – Check the Pipe Diameter
For large diameters, heavier body primer/cement ensures deeper penetration into the pipe wall.
Above certain thresholds (6" for Schedule 40, 4" for Schedule 80), move to heavier grades.
Step 3 – Choose the Right Color
Purple for inspections and industrial projects.
Clear for clean, aesthetic finishes in residential settings.
Drying & Setting Times
On average, you’ll use half as much primer as cement. We supply both in quarts and gallons to match project sizes. Setting and cure times depend on the cement type, pipe size, and temperature — always follow manufacturer recommendations for optimal results.
